Why We Start New E-Commerce Brands on Shopify's Email Marketing Platform

Why We Start New E-Commerce Brands on Shopify's Email Marketing Platform

When a brand-new e-commerce business asks us which email platform to use, our answer is often a surprise to them: start with Shopify Email.

Not Klaviyo. Not Mailchimp. Not Omnisend. Shopify Email, the native email tool built directly into their Shopify dashboard.

We know what you might be thinking. Isn't Klaviyo the best email platform for e-commerce? Yes, for brands at a certain stage, it is. We use Klaviyo with most of our established clients and we love it. But for a brand that's brand new, still validating its market, and just getting its email list off the ground? Starting with Shopify Email is the smarter move. Here's why:

The Simplicity Advantage Is Real

Email marketing has a steep enough learning curve without adding the complexity of learning a sophisticated external platform at the same time. Shopify Email lives inside the Shopify dashboard. Your customer data, order history, and audience segments are all right there. No API connections to configure. No data syncing to troubleshoot. No learning a completely separate piece of software before you can send your first campaign.

For a founder who is managing product development, customer service, fulfillment, and a dozen other things, the mental overhead of adding a complex email platform from day one is a real cost. Shopify Email makes it possible to start building email habits and an email list without that overhead.

It's Free Until You Have Volume

Shopify Email is included with every Shopify plan and is free for up to 10,000 emails per month. For a new brand with a small but growing list, that's typically enough to run a solid campaign strategy with no additional cost.

Klaviyo's pricing is based on contact count and scales up as your list grows. For a brand with a small list, the difference in cost isn't dramatic. But for a business that's still in the revenue-building phase, every cost decision matters. Starting on Shopify Email and migrating to Klaviyo when the list and the strategy warrant it is a sensible approach.

The Data Integration Is Seamless

Because Shopify Email is native to Shopify, it has access to your customer data in ways that third-party platforms can approximate but not quite replicate out of the box. You can segment based on purchase history, product views, order value, and location without any setup work. You can trigger emails based on Shopify customer events directly.

For a new brand, this means you can start building smart, behavior-based email communication from the beginning, not just batch-and-blast campaigns to your whole list. A customer who bought Product A gets a different follow-up than someone who browsed but didn't purchase. That kind of relevance, even at a simple level, makes a real difference in engagement and conversion.

It Covers the Fundamentals Well

Shopify Email handles everything a new brand needs:

  • Campaigns to your full list or segments

  • Basic automation including a welcome email and abandoned checkout

  • Branded templates that pull your logo, colors, and products directly from your store

  • Open rate, click rate, and revenue tracking

  • List segmentation based on customer behavior

That's not everything, but it's the right thing for a brand that's still building its foundation.

You don't need advanced A/B testing workflows and predictive analytics when you're just getting started. You need clean, on-brand emails going to the right people with a clear call to action. Shopify Email does that.

When to Make the Move to Klaviyo

We want to be clear: Shopify Email is a starting point, not a forever home for a brand serious about email marketing. There's a point in every growing brand's journey where Klaviyo's capabilities become genuinely worth the investment.

Here's how we think about when that migration makes sense:

  • Your list is growing past 1,000 to 2,000 subscribers and you're sending regularly. At this point you're ready for the more sophisticated segmentation and automation that Klaviyo enables.

  • You want to build multi-step automation flows. Shopify Email's automation is limited to basic triggers. A full welcome sequence, a multi-touch abandoned cart sequence, a post-purchase series with branching logic, these require Klaviyo.

  • You're ready to invest in email as a serious revenue channel. When email is a meaningful part of your marketing strategy and you're tracking revenue attribution closely, Klaviyo's analytics and optimization tools earn their cost.

  • You want deep A/B testing capabilities. Subject line testing, content testing, timing optimization, Klaviyo makes this significantly more sophisticated than Shopify Email allows.

The migration from Shopify Email to Klaviyo is straightforward because your data already lives in Shopify. Your subscriber list, your customer segments, your purchase history, it all comes over cleanly. You're not starting from scratch. You're upgrading the tools that operate on top of the foundation you've already built.

The Principle Behind This Recommendation

The reason we recommend starting with Shopify Email isn't because it's the best email platform available. It's because the best tool is the one you'll actually use consistently at the stage you're in.

A brand that sends simple, well-timed, on-brand emails using Shopify Email every single week will outperform a brand that signed up for Klaviyo, got overwhelmed by the feature set, and sends something once a month when they get around to it. Consistency and relevance beat platform sophistication at every stage of growth.

Build the habit first. Build the list. Learn what your audience responds to. Then upgrade to the tools that let you do more with what you've built.

The email platform decision matters a lot less than most brands think. What matters is showing up consistently with emails worth reading. Start where you can do that sustainably and grow from there.
